QUINTA DIMENSION

How great is this? I wish I lived in America in the 50's. They had the best radio shows, the best television shows. Horror, that is.. Did you know, in 1938, Orson Welles (23 at that stage) played a part in the dramatisation of War of the Worlds (H.G. Wells) on the radio. He did it so convincingly that there were actually people that started to evacuate their houses because he made them believe that Earth was really being attacked by Mars! And that was only radio..
I'm currently reading a book about late night television horror series'. In it they discuss series such as the Twilight Zone (created by Rod Serling, he also wrote most of the 157 episodes), Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Ghost Stories. They give a summary of the series and then they printed the most popular story of the series. I absolutely love that book. It's like my bedtime stories. Do you have any idea the interesting stuff you dream about after you read 'The Monkey's Paw'? You bet your ass you know what that kid looked like after he's been through that machinery and is now knocking on his parents' door...
Definitely the main reason why radio and books are so successful, is because they leave the gory detail to your imagination. And THAT, ladies and gentleman, is why I think someone has yet to successfully turn one of Stephen King's books into a great movie.
I don't know about you, but these fucked up monsters Hollywood creates in their studios frankly doesn't scare me at all. The more human they are, the more scarier it is. Samara (The Ring) comes to mind. I don't care much for the movie per se, but that is one scary looking biach right there. I would think twice now, before sticking my head down a well..
Back to Stephen King. You know, Dreamcatcher was a great book. It was descriptive, it was scary and it definitely develops your imagination. Then came the movie. Already I was a bit sceptical, cos I really liked the book, and the movies usually dissapoint me. I watched it anyway. That worm thing in the toilet was a bit scary, but that overgrown piece of fungus that they had for a monster in the watertower at the end made me laugh. Hoorray for Thomas Jane. He's a fucking brilliant actor. For the life of me I don't know how he kept his pose during the filming of that scene. Maybe because he didn't actually see it while he was pretending to be afraid. Thank goodness for green screen.. I'm sure he cracked his ass laughing about it afterwards though.
Don't you think this is a great poster though? Black and white has such great impact. I hope some cartoonist is reading this, and takes the hint: MAKE A BLACK AND WHITE HORROR CARTOON. Something based on the original pulp fiction paperbacks. That'd be great..
